Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Vijitha Herath, has reaffirmed that the current government will never suppress the media.

Responding to questions from journalists during a media briefing on cabinet decisions held today (06), the Minister addressed concerns about a potential media crackdown. He emphasized that Prime Minister Harini Amasuriya has no intention of threatening the media.

Minister Herath also clarified that claims suggesting a minor incident involving her security personnel were part of an effort to suppress the media were unfounded.

He highlighted that media institutions have a responsibility to adhere to ethical standards in their operations. Furthermore, the Minister stressed the importance of responsible reporting, urging media outlets to ensure that news is disseminated accurately and responsibly.

Minister Herath concluded by stating that the responsibility for managing media practices rests with the media institutions themselves.
