University of Sri Jayewardenepura Student Hospitalized After Alleged Assault by Seniors Over Freshman Rant

A third-year student from the Faculty of Technology at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura is currently receiving treatment at the Weligama Hospital after allegedly being assaulted by a group of senior students. The student claims the attack was carried out by third- and fourth-year undergraduates in opposition to his stance against the controversial “freshman rant” tradition.

This incident emerges just days after the tragic suicide of a second-year student from the Faculty of Technology at Sabaragamuwa University, raising growing concerns about campus-related harassment.

The deceased student, 23-year-old Charith Dilshan, was a resident of the Ihalagama area in Pussellawa. He reportedly took his own life on the night of April 29.

In response, Sabaragamuwa University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunil Shantha, confirmed the appointment of a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding Charith’s death. The committee is tasked with identifying those responsible and recommending further actions.

Charith’s funeral was held yesterday in the Ihalagama area of Atabage.
