Citing sources, Sunday Morning reveals that the Sri Lankan authorities have given approval to two international casino operators from Macau and India to start operations in Sri Lanka.
A highly placed source has revealed that the Sri Lanka Board of Investment (BOI) has facilitated talks between the Sri Lankan authorities to enter Sri Lanka between two casino operators from Macau and India.
Following this, casino operators have been allowed to resume operations pending the issuance of a license under the new regulations.
Sources further revealed that the two multinational casino operators are likely to apply for BOI status after receiving their gaming license if they comply with the required investment limits.
“If they comply with investment restrictions, they can apply for BOI status. At the moment, they will only be eligible to import duty-free construction materials and gaming machines required for the duration of the project.” Relevant sources have mentioned.
A major roadblock in facilitating sports and gaming related investments in Sri Lanka is the lack of a regulator.
However, from 2023, the government has announced its readiness to introduce a new regulatory body called the Casino and Gaming Regulatory Authority.
