The ongoing investigation has uncovered that the fatal shooting of three individuals, including the owner of Disara Guest accommodation in Mahabodhiwatte, Hiniduma, stemmed from a dispute over a fraudulent overseas job scheme. The scam was orchestrated by an individual who falsely claimed to be the secretary of a former government minister.
The tragic incident occurred on the night of the 30th when two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire, killing Idunil Saman Kumara (55), the owner of Disara Guest and a resident of Mahabodhiwatte, Panangala. The other victims were Chathuranga Kumara, a resident of Tuwimulla, Hiniduma, and Neville, a resident of Ambalangoda.
Job Scam and Financial Transactions
Investigations, including a forensic analysis of phone networks, have revealed that Neville from Ambalangoda had paid Rs. 1.5 million, expecting to secure an opportunity to work abroad. Additionally, his brother had handed over Rs. 1.3 million for the same purpose. Both transactions were made through the owner of Disara Guest to a man named Priyantha, a resident of Hiniduma, who falsely presented himself as the secretary of a former government minister.
The victims reportedly trusted the scammer, believing in his supposed political connections. However, after failing to secure jobs abroad even after a change in government, Neville and others persistently contacted the fraudulent secretary, demanding answers.
Underworld Links and Suspicions
Further investigations have exposed potential links between the crime and Karandeniye Sudda, a notorious underworld figure currently residing abroad. According to police sources, Neville had confronted the fake ministerial secretary and even informed Karandeniye Sudda, stating that he was unafraid of repercussions.
Authorities also recorded initial statements from the suspect regarding the financial transactions linked to the fraudulent job scheme. However, upon further inquiry, it was discovered that the individual had gone into hiding as the police intensified their search.
Ongoing Investigation and Police Pursuit
Law enforcement agencies suspect that the fugitive holds crucial information about the triple murder. Consequently, multiple locations where he is believed to be hiding have been subjected to thorough police searches.
A senior police officer confirmed that efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the suspect to unravel the full extent of the crime. The investigation remains active, with authorities working to bring those responsible to justice.
