Trincomalee High Court Grants Bail to Venerable Kassapa Thero and 10 Others

The Trincomalee High Court has granted bail to 10 suspects, including Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thero, who were remanded in connection with the Trincomalee Buddha statue incident.

The bail application filed on behalf of the group, which includes Venerable Kassapa Thero, was taken up before the High Court today (11).

Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thero and 10 suspects, including four monks, had been arrested over allegations of constructing an unauthorized hut and installing a Buddha statue within the Trincomalee city coastal protection zone.

The suspects were previously produced before the Trincomalee High Court last Monday. During the proceedings, the State Counsel representing the Attorney General sought two days’ time to submit objections to the bail applications.

Accordingly, the High Court granted the request of the State Counsel and postponed the consideration of the bail applications until today (11), instructing that any preliminary objections be filed before the hearing.
