Tri Nikaya’s Prelates Submit Strong Objections to LGBT Bill, Citing Threats to Cultural Values and Social Structure
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Expressing their strong opposition and displeasure over the passage of the LGBT Bill in Parliament, the Prelates of the ‘Tri Nikayas’ have submitted their written objections to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, accompanied by their signatures.

They assert that this bill, recently introduced to Parliament as a private member’s proposal, aims to fulfil the unwise needs of a very few people, disregarding the country’s long-standing cultural values.

The Maha Nayaka Theros emphasize that the LGBT bill will lead to the distortion of the entire social structure and the decline of societal values. They believe that such bills, presented with narrow objectives, will undermine family cohesion, create social imbalances, and severely threaten social security.

The prelates argue that public representatives’ support for such laws, which they say undermine supreme social concepts like motherhood and fatherhood, demonstrates a lack of understanding of the country’s cultural values and a clear indication of the misguided nature of current Sri Lankan political currents.

They warn that prejudices stemming from this moral decline will negatively impact individuals’ mental, physical, and spiritual health. As representatives of the Trinitarian Maha Sangha, they express their strong displeasure and protest against any attempts by government and parliamentary representatives to pass a bill that they believe leads to social decline.
