The Teachers’ Principals’ Trade Union Alliance (TPTUA) Issues Ultimatum to Finance Ministry: Resolve Salary Anomalies or Face Severe Trade Union Action

Joseph Stalin, General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), conveyed a stern warning from the Teachers’ Principals’ Trade Union Alliance (TPTUA) to the Finance Ministry Secretary. TPTUA declared they would initiate drastic trade union measures if their demands, including salary anomaly resolutions, remained unaddressed.

In a press release issued yesterday, TPTUA disclosed their meeting with the Finance Ministry Secretary, arranged in response to a written appeal dated March 11. The union stressed the urgency of receiving the remaining two-thirds of their salary anomaly payments, earmarked in the 2024 budget, along with allocations for reviewing answer scripts for the 2023 General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level (O/L) exams and related duties.

Despite their formal request, TPTUA lamented the absence of any response from the Ministry, prompting their visit yesterday. During the meeting, discussions were held with the Additional Secretary, who pledged to facilitate a dialogue with the Ministry Secretary upon his return from a week-long trip abroad.

TPTUA emphasized their resolve to seek resolution without compromising student education. However, they cautioned the Additional Secretary that failure to address their concerns would force them to pursue extensive trade union actions in the future.
