Cabinet approval has been given on December 12, 2022 to amend the Local Government Polls Ordinance, the President’s Election Act, the Parliamentary Elections Act and the Provincial Council Elections Act so that legal action can be taken in cases of violation of media norms when an election has been announced. Accordingly, the drafters of the laws have started the preparation of the revised bills.

The government announces that instead of amending the relevant election acts separately by incorporating the above amendments, it has been found appropriate to introduce a new act called the Election Act.

Accordingly, the proposal submitted by President Ranil Wickramasinghe to instruct a draftsman to prepare the bill for the introduction of a new bill by incorporating the relevant amendments has been approved by the cabinet.
