The North Western Crimes Division has arrested three individuals, including two officers from the Excise Department, in connection with the illegal transportation of 1,200 kilograms of beedi leaves, valued at approximately Rs. 1 billion. The consignment was reportedly smuggled into the country by boat from India.
According to police sources, the arrested suspects include the driver of the lorry transporting the contraband, an excise inspector attached to the Mirigama Excise Office, and an excise department driver.
Investigators have also taken into custody the lorry used to transport the beedi leaves and a van that was allegedly used by the excise officers to escort and provide security for the illegal cargo.
