The Supreme Court ordered to call on August 04 to consider an appeal petition filed against the increase in electricity tariffs, seeking to nullify the decision taken by the Court of Appeal to dismiss the writ petition without hearing it.

This petition was called before the three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Mrs. Murdu Fernando.

The panel of judges ordered to call on August 4 to consider the relevant petition.

The respective appeal petitions had been filed by the Electricity Consumers Union and Environmental Justice Centre.

Public Utilities Commission, Ceylon Electricity Board and others have been named as respondents.

In the appeal petition filed before the Supreme Court, it has been stated that the recent decision of the Council of Ministers to revise the electricity tariffs is against the law.

Through this, the Council of Ministers has curtailed the powers of the Public Utilities Commission.

Therefore, the petitioners request the Supreme Court to rule that the decision taken by the Court of Appeal to null and void and reject the writ petition filed by them.
