According to the Association of Government Veterinary Officers, the disease with skin nodules spreading among cattle is also spreading to the Western Province.
The president of the association, Mr. Dr. Sisira Piyasiri, said that the authorities should act quickly to control the situation.
The health department had informed the people to refrain from eating beef until the disease is brought under control.
“Skin nodules are currently spreading in Sri Lanka. Especially in the North-West and North-Central Provinces, it has spread rapidly and now it has come to the Central Province as well. It is spreading from the Central Province to the Western Province. The country’s milk production is facing a big problem. The production of these animals is greatly reduced. However, after this disease, these animals may not be able to walk. Food intake decreases. Especially small animals die. This is becoming an economically damaging disease. In order to control viral diseases, vaccination should be done to suppress those diseases. This vaccine should also be administered in areas with high milk production such as Central, North-West and Uva to control this skin nodule disease…”
