The Parliament of Canada unanimously adopted May 18 as “Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day” last year.

Accordingly, the Prime Minister of Canada issued a special announcement commemorating the Tamils who died in the war yesterday, which was the Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that Canada will never stop standing up for the rights of those who died and those who survived the civil war.

Fourteen years ago, today, the Prime Minister said, the hearts of Canadians are forever linked to the thousands of lives lost in the final stages of the civil war, the thousands of Tamils who died in the war, the survivors and their loved ones suffering from the pain of loss.

The Prime Minister says that he heard the painful stories of the Tamils affected by the civil war in Sri Lanka from all parts of the country, and says that he can never forget those stories.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that Canada will play a leading role in submitting proposals to the World Human Rights Council that Sri Lanka should protect human rights.

The Prime Minister recalls that Canada has already imposed sanctions against four Sri Lankan government officials as a response to the human rights violations that have occurred in Sri Lanka.

The contribution of the Tamil diaspora to the economy of their country has been praised by the Prime Minister of Canada.

The Prime Minister also asks all Canadians to study the impact of the civil war in Sri Lanka.
