It is reported that it has been decided to give the chairmanship of the Parliamentary Finance Committee to Dr. Harsha De Silva, of Samagi Jana Balawega.
It is learned that the President informed this at the meeting of the ruling party MPs held yesterday.
Accordingly, the President is scheduled to come to Parliament tomorrow and inform the Finance Committee about this.
According to the Standing Orders, the Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Parliament should be a Member of the Opposition.
Accordingly, SJB nominated Dr. Harsha de Silva.
But the government appointed Mr. Mayantha Dissanayake from the opposition and took steps to bring its affairs into a crisis in the first round.
Due to this, the opposition led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya has been asking the government to appoint Mr. Harsha de Silva to this position.
On several occasions, the government took steps to nominate various members for the position of acting chairman of the committee, but the opposition continued to insist on the government saying that Mr. Harsha de Silva should be appointed to the position of chairman.
Accordingly, before the President left for Japan, Mr. Kabir Hashim and Mr. Harsha de Silva had met the President and reached an agreement regarding getting the relevant position, but the Prime Minister and Minister Prasanna Ranatunga had taken steps to protest against it in Parliament.
