Mr. Nimal G. Punchihewa, Chairman of the Election Commission, said that he is expected to make another request to the Treasury Secretary next week for money for the local government elections. Sri Lanka Latest News

He also mentioned that this request is being made because the government itself is issuing statements that the economic situation of the country is at a certain level.

Although the Election Commission had previously made several requests to the government for money for the local government elections, the Treasury Secretary informed the commission that due to the current financial crisis in the country, the money could not be provided.

Accordingly, the local government election was postponed indefinitely.

Meanwhile, most of the postal ballots related to the local government elections have been printed and finished. They are currently deposited in the safe depository of the Government Press.

In the meantime, Mr. Nimal G. Punchihewa further said that even though the provincial election has been postponed, the necessary preparations are being made for all the upcoming elections including that election.
