Doctors, bankers, civil service engineers, accountants protest because they have to pay taxes as they earn. I think there is a reason why the lawyers did not object. The judges have brought an argument in this regard. Because their income must be declared and not hidden. Lawyers know how to avoid taxes. They don’t declare their income from clients.” said the Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.

He mentioned this while addressing a conference organized by the Sri Lanka Bar Association held in Colombo yesterday (12).

The first day of the two-day conference was held with the theme “The Role of Law in a Crisis”.

Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe and American Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chang attended the ceremony presided over by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.

Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, President of H Bank, who spoke there,

“Those who were hiding dollar exchange are now trying to exchange them in the black market but unfortunately they are getting a low rate. We gave one month time to exporters who were collecting dollars as well as importers who were collecting dollars, professionals who were collecting dollars from the black market like doctors, engineers, lawyers to exchange those dollars for rupees without questioning. But only 30 million dollars were collected. The exporters who listened to us received about 365 to 370 rupees per dollar during that period.

That is why we intervened in the market. Because of their actions, dollars are now being exchanged for rupees in a hurry. Although only 30 million dollars were collected during the period, they have brought 500 million dollars to the market in 07 days. There was a collapse of the dollar market, but due to our intervention, it was prevented from collapsing further.

Doctors, bankers, civil service engineers, accountants protest because they have to pay taxes as they earn. I think there is a reason why the lawyers did not object. The judges have brought an argument in this regard. Because their income must be declared and not hidden. Lawyers know how to avoid taxes. They don’t declare their income from clients.”
