A tense situation unfolded last night in front of the Moratuwa Police Station as more than 100 individuals staged a protest, alleging the unjust arrest of several villagers.
According to the police, the incident originated when a group of individuals obstructed the road during the construction of a pandal near a church in the Moratuwa area. When officers from the Traffic Division attempted to intervene, the group reportedly obstructed their duties. This led to a confrontation during which two police officers were assaulted. The injured officers are currently receiving treatment at Panadura Hospital.
In connection with the incident, the Moratuwa Police have arrested five individuals for obstructing police duties and involvement in the assault.
In response to the arrests, residents of the area gathered at the police station to voice their dissent. The protest prompted the intervention of several priests, including Father Cyril Gamini Fernando, the media spokesman for the Archdiocese of Colombo, in an effort to diffuse tensions and bring the situation under control.
