During the second reading of the 2026 Budget, the Tamil Progressive Alliance voted in favour of the budget with the hope of ensuring the welfare of the general public and plantation workers. However, if the government fails to implement the promised salary increase, the Alliance will act against the government, stated Nuwara Eliya District MP Velusami Radhakrishnan, Leader of the Workers’ People’s Front and Deputy Leader of the Tamil Progressive Alliance, speaking in Nuwara Eliya.
He made these comments on the 15th while addressing a special media briefing at his Nuwara Eliya office.
Expressing further views, the MP said:
“We support the good initiatives brought forward by the government, irrespective of political differences.
We voted in favour of the 2026 Budget as the government promised a salary increase of Rs. 400, which is a victory for plantation workers.
But if, for any reason, the government fails to fulfil the promises it made, do not doubt that the Tamil Progressive Alliance will then act against the government.
Just because we voted for the budget, it does not mean we are indebted to the government in any way.
It is not us who will face continuous backlash from the public, but only those who opposed this proposal.
We will never oppose any good proposal presented by the government for the benefit of the people.
We always stand where the well-being of the public is ensured.
There is no anger or conflict with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya simply because we voted for the budget. There should be no doubt that our future political journey will also continue alongside the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.”
