Sri Lanka is set to mark a significant milestone in its pharmaceutical industry as Synergy Pharmaceuticals announces plans to establish Asia’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in the country.

The state-of-the-art factory is being constructed on a 650,000 square foot site in the Bingiriya area of Kurunegala. Once operational, it will have the capacity to produce 5 billion tablets and capsules, 130 million injections, and 34 million ointments annually.

Equipped with cutting-edge technology and modern machinery, the facility aims to manufacture a range of pharmaceutical products while also adopting sustainable energy practices. To support its operations, the factory will generate electricity through a 3-megawatt solar power system.

Industry experts believe that this major development could save Sri Lanka millions of dollars currently spent on importing medicines. With this initiative, Sri Lanka is poised to become the largest pharmaceutical manufacturer in the South Asian region, significantly reducing its dependency on foreign pharmaceutical imports.

Synergy Pharmaceuticals Corporation (Pvt) Ltd. plans to produce a wide array of essential and high-quality medicines at this new facility. The manufacturing line will include Oral Solid Dosage (OSD) forms, vaccines, cancer medications, and hormonal drugs—all made using advanced and internationally recognized technologies.

In addition to its manufacturing capabilities, the facility is expected to host the largest pharmaceutical research and development laboratory in South Asia. Initial production operations are scheduled to commence by the end of this year.

The design and construction of the factory are being handled by Senura Civil Engineering (Pvt) Ltd.
