Supreme Court Orders Retroactive Promotions for 27 Police Officers Effective from January 2003
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Supreme Court has ordered that the promotions of 27 Chief Inspectors of Police and Police Inspectors be implemented retroactively, effective from January 1, 2003.

This decision followed the consideration of a Fundamental Rights Petition filed by the 27 officers, who sought to have their promotions granted with an earlier effective date.

The petition was heard before a bench led by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and comprising Supreme Court Justices Murdu Fernando and Dilip Nawaz.

The petitioners named the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Attorney General, the National Police Commission, and 30 others as respondents in their case.

Delivering the judgment, Supreme Court Justice Dilip Nawaz, with the agreement of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and Justice Murdu Fernando, acknowledged that the petitioners were officers who joined the police force in 1990 and 1992. It was highlighted that during their tenure, they had only been promoted to the ranks of Chief Inspector of Police and Inspector of Police.

This ruling ensures the officers’ promotions are aligned with their rightful seniority and years of service.
