The tragic death of Deegadantu-01, the renowned elephant known for its majestic long tusks in the Kala Wewa Reserve, has been attributed to a heart attack triggered by a high-voltage electric shock.

This revelation came during a post-mortem examination conducted yesterday.

In connection with the incident, a manager of an insurance company was arrested and remanded until December 12 by the Kekirawa Magistrate’s Court. Authorities also recovered electronic devices, including electrical wires, from the suspect’s residence.

Deegadantu-01 met its untimely end last Thursday after encountering an illegally installed electric wire at a house in the Giguruwewa area of Galkiriyagama, Anuradhapura.

To honor the life of this majestic animal, religious ceremonies were held yesterday, reflecting the deep respect and sorrow of the community.
