The Supreme Court issued a notice yesterday (12) ordering Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and the Cabinet of Ministers to present facts to the court regarding the petition that has been submitted requesting that the local government candidates be ordered not to use state resources. After considering the petition filed by the Paffarel organization asking the local government candidates not to use public resources as well as ordering the officers to act according to the series of road advisories issued to the Election Commission, the Supreme Court also ordered that the relevant notice be handed over to the respondent Cabinet through the Registrar of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court ordered to file on the 24th if there are preliminary objections to the petition and if there are objections to file on the 28th, the Supreme Court also ordered to convene the petition on July 03 to verify the facts.
The petition was considered before a bench comprising of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Supreme Court Justices Kumuduni Wickramasinghe and Achala Vengappuli.
The Attorney General, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and the Cabinet of Ministers have been named as respondents in the petition filed by the Baffarel organization.
In this petition, which was filed by lawyer Manjula Malasuriya, the Paffarel organization has stated that the date for the presidential election has been fixed between September 17th and October 16th.
Despite this, the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance has issued a circular called Budget Proposals 2024 and proposed to implement development projects in the rural areas of the country, in addition to that, another circular called Kadukara Darshayaka has proposed to provide financial facilities to improve the living standards of the people in rural areas. It has been announced that both these projects should be completed by July 31st.
After considering the facts presented, the bench issued the relevant orders and ordered the petition to be called on July 3rd.
