Tamil National Alliance Member President’s Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran has strongly rejected the proposal of a Tamil general candidate for the presidential election. Responding to the suggestion that a Tamil general candidate should be put to the vote, he says that the right to take such a decision does not belong to the civil society but to the politicians. “This is something that should be brought before political leaders and political parties. Civil society has a responsibility. They can express their opinions. Their suggestions are welcome. But this is political work. Elections are completely political work. Civil society members have not been selected to lead the people in that politics. They have chosen us. We have that mandate. The responsibility of making that decision is in our hands. It cannot be given to anyone else. If we do that, we will be neglecting our responsibility. “We should never allow this irresponsible act to decide the fate of our people,” said the MP.
At a time when the date of the presidential election has not yet been announced, the result of the upcoming presidential election has already been decided. Councilor Sumanthiran, expressing his reluctance to show the numbers, had further emphasized to his party members that if a Tamil general candidate is presented, election campaign activities should be carried out against it.
“What decision will come is written on the wall. Don’t want to show statistics. Even if all the people in the Tamil national position vote, it will not reach twenty percent. If a common Tamil candidate is appointed, we should campaign against him. When he suffered an extreme defeat, we should be able to say that this is not our political position, but someone’s joke. I say this as a member of the mainstream Tamil party. I tell that to our party members. “We have a great responsibility to campaign strongly among the people,” said the MP.
