Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma has announced that the newly imposed 30 percent reciprocal tariff on Sri Lankan exports to the United States will be levied in addition to the existing taxes already applicable to those goods.
Dr. Suriyapperuma further noted that this reciprocal tariff will also be imposed on other countries in the region. Despite the added tax burden, the government remains optimistic that Sri Lanka’s export competitiveness can be sustained, taking into account the final prices after these adjustments.
He also emphasized that while the United States had initially proposed a 44 percent tariff rate, it has since been reduced to 30 percent. Among the countries in the region, Sri Lanka has received the most significant reduction from the originally announced rates.
