Sri Lanka Records 101 Shooting Incidents in 2024: Police Implement New Measures to Combat Violence
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Police Media Spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manatunga revealed to Mawrata that between January 1 and December 25, 2024, a total of 101 shooting incidents were reported across the island. These incidents have primarily stemmed from land disputes and business conflicts among individuals, including those involving organized underworld gangs.

According to SSP Manatunga, 55 of these cases involved clashes between organized underworld criminals, compared to 65 such incidents reported during the same period last year.

In response to the escalating situation, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has appointed a special committee comprising 20 police officers operating under the supervision of the respective area police chiefs. This committee aims to curb the ongoing violence through targeted interventions.

Additionally, the IGP has initiated a series of security measures, including short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans to enhance public safety. One of these measures includes the introduction of a weekly Police Public Day to engage with the community and address concerns directly.

SSP Manatunga further noted that on certain occasions, the Minister of Public Security, Ananda Wijepala, and the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence are expected to participate in these public engagements.
