Sri Lanka Police have received state-of-the-art Speed Gun devices manufactured in the United States, aimed at reducing road accidents across the country.
According to police sources, these high-tech devices, which function effectively even at night, can detect speeding vehicles from a distance of 1.2 kilometers. The recorded footage can also be presented as evidence in court, strengthening enforcement against traffic violations.
The police further stated that the device captures crucial details, including the vehicle’s speed, the driver’s photograph, and the vehicle number, enhancing accuracy in law enforcement.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manoj Ranawala, Director of Traffic Control and Road Safety, provided key insights into the initiative:
“Between 2020 and 2024, Sri Lanka recorded 11,617 road accidents, along with 33,259 serious accidents, resulting in 12,322 fatalities. By February 26, 2025, 341 more deaths are expected. These are healthy individuals losing their lives.”
“This Speed Gun has been introduced to help reduce such accidents, as excessive speed remains a major cause of road crashes.”
Highlighting its advanced features, SSP Ranawala added:
“This is a cutting-edge speed detection device, known as ‘Two-Cam.’ It is equipped with night vision and can detect speeding vehicles up to 1.2 kilometers away.”
“The device records the driver’s photo, vehicle number, and speed, displaying them instantly. There is no room for denial.”
“Additionally, the recorded video can be used as evidence in court.”
Currently, 30 Speed Guns have been introduced across Sri Lanka at a cost of Rs. 3.3 million per unit, with deployment in 30 police divisions. Plans are already in place to procure 15 more devices, ensuring coverage across all 45 police divisions in the country.
This initiative marks a significant step in enhancing road safety and reducing fatal accidents caused by reckless speeding.
