Peter Brewer, Senior Mission Chief for Sri Lanka at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stated that as economic opportunities improve in Sri Lanka, rising incomes and reduced poverty will lead to fewer Sri Lankans leaving the country and an increase in those choosing to stay.
Speaking at a press conference in Washington, USA, yesterday (04), Brewer noted that Sri Lanka has already achieved a growth rate of 5.5 percent.
He further highlighted that the IMF has provided over $1.3 billion in debt relief to Sri Lanka so far. Additionally, he acknowledged that the country has met all key targets up to the end of 2024, except for the indicator targets related to social spending.
Brewer emphasized that Sri Lanka has made remarkable progress in a short period and stressed the importance of maintaining price stability. He also underscored the need to prevent the Central Bank of Sri Lanka from financing the government’s budget deficit.
