The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka says it is continuing its investigation into a complaint alleging that former Intelligence Director Suresh Salle, who is currently in custody, has been subjected to various forms of torture.

Commissioner of the Commission, Nimal G. Punchihewa, stated that statements will be recorded from officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding the matter today (16).

Relatives of Suresh Salle, who is in the custody of the CID, recently lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, alleging that he has been subjected to various forms of torture.

It is also reported that a special inspection was carried out on the cell where Suresh Salle was being held in connection with the complaint.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka stated that he is being held in a general cell at the CID, where several basic shortcomings, including inadequate ventilation, were observed.

The Commission has also informed CID officials regarding these findings.

Furthermore, statements have been recorded from other detainees who were held near Suresh Salle’s cell, as well as from CID officials.

Additional statements are yet to be obtained from CID officials. The Commission also noted that attention has been given to the medical care being provided to Suresh Salle, who is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
