A gazette notification has been issued permitting the importation of salt into Sri Lanka without the need for an import license until the 10th of next month.

According to Import Controller General Upulmali Premathilaka, any importer who obtains recommendations from the Ministry of Health is eligible to import salt under this regulation.

The notification allows for the importation of both non-iodized and edible salt.

Meanwhile, Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security, Wasantha Samarasinghe, announced that 250 metric tons of salt for consumption are scheduled to be imported into the country today (20).

He further stated that the consignments of salt will arrive in Sri Lanka on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The imported salt will be sourced from India.

This decision follows Cabinet approval granted during the meeting held on the 15th, which endorsed the easing of import restrictions specifically for salt.
