Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne informed Parliament today (20) that the Constitutional Council is scheduled to meet at 2:00 PM to make a decision regarding the appointment of the new Auditor General.
This announcement was made in response to a question raised by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dr. Harsha de Silva.
Dr. Harsha de Silva stated:
“There should be an Auditor General in this country. It has now been 41 days without one. For 225 years, there has been a consistent tradition of appointing an Auditor General. Is there any reason why the most senior individual in the state service has not been appointed to this position?”
Responding to the query, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne said:
“The Constitutional Council will convene at two o’clock this afternoon. We have received proposals, and the President has sent his recommendations. The matter is being addressed accordingly.”
