Kandy Divisional Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anuruddha Bandaranaike announced during a special media briefing held at the Kandy Police Headquarters that comprehensive security measures have been implemented to ensure public safety during the Randoli Perahera segment of the historic Esala Perahera in Kandy.
According to SSP Bandaranaike, nearly 6,000 police officers have been deployed to maintain security until the conclusion of the Randoli Perahera. He emphasized that vehicles will not be permitted to operate along the Perahera routes throughout the procession period.
As part of the ongoing security operations, police have conducted searches during which a suspect in possession of eight national identity cards, along with several other suspicious individuals, were arrested.
The SSP urged the public to avoid using camera flashes and other light-emitting devices that may disturb the elephants participating in the procession. He further appealed to the public to cooperate fully with security personnel during security checks, including baggage inspections.
Additionally, plainclothes officers have been stationed throughout the city and will be operating both day and night until the end of the Perahera to monitor the situation and respond promptly to any security concerns.
Given the large crowds expected in Kandy for the Randoli Perahera, heightened focus has been placed on safeguarding public security. SSP Bandaranaike requested the public to promptly report any suspicious activity or security-related concerns to the nearest police officer and reiterated the importance of public assistance in maintaining a safe and successful event.
