Former Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea and former Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Mr. Jong-Moon Choi, met with Opposition Leader Hon. Sajith Premadasa at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of Sri Lanka today.
Ambassador Choi’s visit was aimed at extending an official invitation to Hon. Sajith Premadasa to participate in the forthcoming International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP). During the meeting, Ambassador Choi highlighted the significance of the conference in fostering political dialogue, parliamentary engagement, and regional cooperation among Asian nations.
The discussions focused on a wide range of regional and global issues, including economic cooperation, trade and investment, climate change, environmental conservation, disaster management, food and energy security, technological innovation, and sustainable development. Both leaders underscored the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, promoting regional stability, and enhancing multilateral cooperation to address shared challenges.
Special attention was given to strengthening regional collaboration in addressing climate and weather-related risks, protecting biodiversity, improving disaster preparedness, and promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth. The two leaders also emphasized the importance of empowering youth to play a greater role in public policy, innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership across the region.
During the meeting, Ambassador Choi recalled the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa and paid tribute to his contributions toward strengthening the long-standing friendship between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea. He noted that President Premadasa’s commitment to people-centered development, international cooperation, and constructive engagement with development partners continues to be remembered with respect and appreciation in Korea.
Hon. Sajith Premadasa expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Choi for the invitation and reaffirmed his commitment to democratic governance, social justice, environmental stewardship, and sustainable economic development. He also stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships among Asian countries to advance peace, prosperity, resilience, and people-centered development.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to promoting dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding in pursuit of a more sustainable, secure, and prosperous future for Asia.
