Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Nalin Bandara announced today that the opposition intends to nominate a candidate for the Speaker’s position in the upcoming parliamentary session.
Speaking at a media conference held in Colombo, MP Bandara stated that the opposition’s proposal would be presented during the 17th parliamentary session scheduled for Tuesday.
He emphasized the need for accountability, particularly from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). “The JVP must act responsibly. The Speaker’s resignation alone is insufficient. They have misled the people of this country, and we believe the Speaker should step down from his parliamentary role entirely. We hold strong criticisms regarding this matter,” Bandara asserted.
He also expressed skepticism about the potential nominee for Speaker put forward by the National People’s Power (NPP), commonly referred to as the “compass.” “We lack confidence in the qualifications and trustworthiness of the person expected to be nominated by the compass. We have serious reservations and cannot afford to be deceived again. We acknowledge our mistake in previously supporting the nominee,” he said.
Bandara concluded by reaffirming the opposition’s commitment to proposing a suitable candidate. “On the next parliamentary day, we will definitely put forward a name. Unlike previous nominees, this candidate will have credible qualifications and will not rely on fraudulent educational certificates,” he stated.
