The Salt Producers Association has confirmed a shortage of salt in the local market, attributing it to delays in the government’s scheduled salt imports.

Association Chairman Ganaka Amarasinghe stated that although the government had approved the importation of 30 metric tons of salt, the process has been delayed. As a result, the market is currently experiencing a shortage of this essential commodity.

Mr. Amarasinghe assured that the situation is expected to normalize within the next week, as the delayed salt shipment is anticipated to arrive on the island soon.

Meanwhile, both consumers and traders have raised concerns over a noticeable increase in salt prices. Reports indicate that a 1-kilogram packet of salt cubes is currently being sold at prices ranging between Rs. 450 and Rs. 500.

Several consumers have also voiced their frustration on social media platforms regarding the price surge.

In response to these concerns, Director of Consumer Affairs and Information, Mr. Asela Bandara, confirmed that the Consumer Affairs Authority has received complaints related to salt pricing. He further stated that the authority’s raiding officers have been instructed to take appropriate action to address the issue.
