Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said in Parliament that the government — which had 23,000 power-sector workers take to the streets — is now declaring it is prepared to “kill and die,” even if it costs “hundreds of thousands,” to protect itself. He urged that people must not be killed but kept alive, and insisted that any restructuring of the power sector should safeguard those 23,000 jobs. He added that when the Samagi Jana Balawegaya met with the IMF yesterday, the party likewise said the restructuring must protect jobs and that these workers must not be forgotten.
