Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, speaking in Parliament today, accused the Speaker of obstructing the freedom of speech within the House. He stated that while the Chief Organizer of the Government Party is given the opportunity to express his views, the same privilege is not extended to the Chief Organizer of the Opposition.
Premadasa emphasized that it is the Speaker’s duty to ensure equal time is allocated to both Government and Opposition representatives. However, he alleged that the current Speaker is failing to uphold this responsibility, instead demonstrating partiality by treating the two sides differently.
“This sets a dangerous precedent,” Premadasa said, expressing his disapproval of the Speaker’s conduct. He further stated that, under these circumstances, his continued presence in the chamber serves no purpose.
