Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa said there is no anchorage for fishing boats even though many fishermen are engaged in the fishing industry at Polikandee in Velvatathura, Jaffna in Parliament today (19). (Sri Lanka Latest News)

Therefore, Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, requested that the attention of the minister in charge be drawn to this matter and the work be carried out promptly.

Also, the Fishery and Aquatic Resources Act No. 11 of 2017 prohibits bottom trawling, which is carried out by dragging nets along the ocean floor, and this causes harmful conditions to the marine environment for the fish resources. However, efforts are being made to stop bottom trawling in other parts of the country in Jaffna. The opposition leader said this is being implemented and there is no solution even though the Fisheries Department and the Monitoring Committee have been notified.

Also, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa said that he wants to know if space has been given for bottom trawling in Jaffna and if there is a problem as to why the fisheries officials are silent about this and if such approval is given, it is a violation of the Fisheries Act.
