Rohitha Rajapaksa Marks Indigenous Peoples’ Day with Visit to Dambana
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Rohitha Rajapaksa visited Dambana shortly after the Prime Minister’s controversial statement in Parliament regarding the Supreme Sat rocket.

In a Facebook post published in connection with his visit, Rajapaksa shared the following message:

“Today is International Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Yesterday, on the eve of this important day, we had the unique experience of meeting the indigenous Vedda leader Uruwarige Vannila Attho and his community.

Indigenous peoples are not merely another group living within our country — they are our history. They are the living custodians of the original stories of our past, striving to preserve their identity by bridging the past and present while facing numerous challenges. The harmonious relationship they maintain with nature offers us invaluable lessons and deep knowledge about the natural world. Listening to them opens the door to an entirely different system of wisdom for those of us immersed in the technological age.

For my children, too, it was a rare and enriching experience — a beautiful story filled with surprises. They serve as a powerful reminder that our past is woven with unforgettable and respectful relationships. My heartfelt thanks go to them for preserving and safeguarding the history of our nation in the best way possible.”
