The Election Commission has called nominations for the local government elections, and election officials have already begun accepting pledges for the election. In this situation, the cabinet has decided to order all district secretaries to stop accepting pledges for the election until further notice. According to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

According to the opposition leader, this is a complete violation of the people’s democratic rights as well as a violation of their sovereignty.

The opposition leader stated that once an election is declared, it is the responsibility of the Election Commission to maintain the necessary process for conducting the election, and that the cabinet decision is an illegal decision that violates the government’s constitution.

He stated that Samagi Jana Balawega is prepared to stand with the entire country in opposition to the government’s arbitrary process of violating people’s sovereignty and democracy.

Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the opposition leader, stated this in a special statement issued this afternoon at the opposition leader’s office in Colombo.
