Ranil’s government loses majority in parliament now! 134 in 2022 when he becomes president! Now it’s 92! I Sri Lanka Latest News

A few moments ago, 92 Members of Parliament have informed President Ranil Wickremesinghe that they will dedicate themselves to confirm the victory of the current President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming presidential election. It is reported that this notification has been given in the meeting of the ruling party members.Sri Lanka Latest News

According to the Election of the President (Special Provisions) Act No. 2 of 1981, Acting President and Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickramasinghe was elected as the successor Executive President on July 20, 2022 by majority vote of the Members of Parliament. Acting President and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Member of Parliament Dallas Alahapperuma and Member of Parliament Anura Kumara Dissanayake were nominated for the post of Executive President on the previous day i.e. July 19 in Parliament.

Accordingly, the related poll was held on July 20, 2022 in Parliament and Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe received 134 votes and Mr. Dallas Alahapperuma received 82 votes. Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake had received 03 votes. To be elected for the post of successor president, a candidate had to get 50% more votes than the valid number of votes of the members of parliament and Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe had achieved that number of votes. The number of valid votes on that day was 219 votes. Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe had obtained 134 votes.

The number of votes cast that day was 223 and two MPs abstained from voting. 4 votes were designated as rejected votes.

The General Secretary of the Parliament Mr. Dhammika Dasanayake announced to the Parliament that Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe will be elected as the eighth Executive President.

It was announced in the Parliament that Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe was qualified to hold the position of the remaining term of the presidency, which was left vacant with the resignation of former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
