Teachers and professors of Rajarata University commenced a strike today (30), withdrawing from all academic and administrative activities.
President of the Rajarata University Teachers’ Association, Professor Nalaka Geekianage, stated that the strike was launched in protest against the University Grants Commission’s decision to approve a draft amendment to the University Act and submit it to Parliament prior to its formal passage.
He further explained that implementing the proposed bill before it is officially passed would undermine the independence of the university, even if it is enacted later.
Professor Geekianage also emphasized that all universities across the country are supporting this strike.
