The Railway Locomotive Operating Engineers Association has announced plans to launch a 48-hour token strike if longstanding concerns remain unaddressed, according to its General Chairman, K.U. Konthasinghe.
Speaking to the media, Konthasinghe stated that the strike is scheduled to take place on July 30 and 31, should the Ministry of Transport and the Department of Railways fail to respond positively to a formal letter sent by the association on July 22, 2025.
He emphasized that the primary grievances include unresolved administrative issues and inadequate infrastructure facilities affecting the railway driver cadre. Konthasinghe warned that unless a concrete and satisfactory solution is presented, the union will have no choice but to proceed with the strike as planned.
However, he added that if a positive and constructive response is received from the authorities—either today or tomorrow—the strike action will be suspended accordingly.
