The Public Utilities Commission has unanimously decided to increase electricity tariffs for the second quarter of 2026, according to Sri Lanka Latest News.
Accordingly, the revised electricity tariffs will come into effect from April 1.
The Ceylon Electricity Board had requested a 13.56% tariff increase from the Public Utilities Commission for the second quarter of this year.
Under the new revision, the electricity tariff for the 0–30 unit category will increase by 4.3%, resulting in a monthly rise of Rs. 15.
For the 31–60 unit category, tariffs have been increased by 6.9%, with a corresponding monthly increase of Rs. 45.
The 61–90 unit category has also seen a 6.9% increase, leading to a monthly rise of Rs. 120.
Meanwhile, the 91–120 unit category has been increased by 7.1%, translating to a monthly increase of Rs. 420.
For consumption above 180 units, the electricity tariff has been increased, with an overall rise of 25%.
However, steps have been taken to ensure that electricity tariffs will not be increased for religious and charitable institutions consuming less than 180 units per month. The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has also approved a 9.6% tariff increase for consumption exceeding 180 units within the same sector.
In addition, the Commission has decided to increase electricity tariffs for the general purpose and consumer category by 8%, while limiting the tariff increase for the industrial sector to 8.7%.
Furthermore, electricity tariffs for government institutions will be increased by 14.1%, as per the decision of the Utilities Commission.
