The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has announced that it will issue its final decision on the electricity tariff revision for the final quarter of this year tomorrow (14th). The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) had earlier proposed a 6.8 percent increase in electricity tariffs for the period from October to December.
The public consultation process regarding the proposed tariff revision commenced on September 18th in the Eastern Province, with the final consultation held in the Western Province on the 8th.
Taking into consideration the opinions and suggestions presented during these sessions, the PUC is expected to announce tomorrow (14th) how the electricity tariff revision will be implemented.
Approximately 500 individuals have submitted their views and suggestions during the public consultation sessions conducted for this third electricity tariff revision of the year.
Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board Free Employees Union stated that the proposed increase in electricity bills cannot be prevented unless the restructuring of the Electricity Board is properly carried out. The union made this statement after informing the Malwatta and Asgiri Maha Theras about its ongoing trade union action.
Prabath Priyantha, General Secretary of the Ceylon Electricity Board Free Employees Union, further said that the union has already taken legal action concerning the restructuring of the Electricity Board.
In addition, M. D. R. Athula, Chairman of the Electricity Users’ Association, revealed at a recent media conference that the board fee, which currently stands at 1.5 million rupees, will increase to nearly one crore rupees following the division of the Electricity Board.
