Proposal to Raise Retirement Age of Judges Tabled in Parliament by Faizer Musthapha

A proposal to increase the retirement age of judges serving in the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court has been included in the Parliamentary Order Book Supplement. Sri Lanka Latest News

The proposal appears in the Order Book Supplement No. 2 of Parliament, issued on October 10, and has been submitted as a private member’s motion by Member of Parliament and President’s Counsel Faizer Musthapha.

In his submission, MP Musthapha points out that the retirement age of judges in many other countries is higher than that of Sri Lanka. Therefore, he proposes raising the retirement age of judges serving in the country’s higher courts.

Accordingly, the proposal suggests increasing the retirement age of Supreme Court judges from 65 to 67 years, Court of Appeal judges from 63 to 65 years, and High Court judges from 61 to 63 years.

It is understood that this private member’s motion is scheduled to be taken up for debate next year, following the budget discussions.

Although the motion was tabled by opposition MP Faizer Musthapha, reports circulating in political circles previously indicated that the government itself was considering introducing a similar proposal to extend the retirement age of judges of higher courts and the Attorney General.
