University Community Criticizes President and UNP for Catering Solely to the Wealthy
Professor Kennedy Gunawardena, Senior Accountancy Professor at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, asserts that President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s chances of victory remain slim, regardless of any political alliances with the United National Party.
He highlights the public sentiment revealed by recent May rallies, condemning the divisive tactics of political parties and their pursuit of power through manipulation, bribery, and coercion of MPs.
Gunawardena contends that citizens are uniting against the corrupt and elitist politics of figures like Wickremesinghe and Mahinda Rajapaksa, emphasizing the need to end a system that neglects the marginalized and favors a wealthy minority.
Moreover, he criticizes the betrayal of public trust by representatives who prioritize personal gain over national interests, cautioning against such actions in the current political climate.
Citing statistics from the United Nations Development Program, Gunawardena underscores the growing economic disparity in Sri Lanka, where a small elite minority controls a disproportionate share of national resources while a significant portion of the population languishes in poverty.
