On Wednesday (06), Member of Parliament Imtiaz Bakeer Markar presented to Parliament three private member’s bills containing proposals for amending laws relating to Sri Lanka’s electoral system.

As a result, bills amending the Parliamentary Elections Act No. 1 of 1981, the Provincial Council Elections Act No. 2 of 1988, and the Local Authorities Elections Ordinance No. 53 of 1946 were introduced in parliament.

Thus, the importance of giving young people under the age of 35 the opportunity to represent the aforementioned institutions is emphasized by these amendment proposals.

As a result, it has been proposed that, when submitting a nomination paper for parliamentary or provincial council elections, each political party or independent group ensure that not less than one-fourth of the total number of candidates nominated for the electoral district, and not less than one-fourth of the total number of candidates on the district list, are youth candidates.

When submitting nominations for Local Authorities Elections, it is proposed that not less than one-fourth of the total number of candidates to be nominated for the local authority, and not less than one-fourth of the total number of candidates in the district list, be youth candidates.
