Prisons Rehabilitation Commissioner and Media Spokesman Gamini Dissanayake told ‘Mawrata’ that although the Welikada Prison Hospital can provide residential facilities for 180 sick prisoners; the number often rises up to 380. (Sri Lanka Latest News)
He mentioned that in some cases two patients are kept in one bed due to that situation.
But he said that the sick prisoners are sent back to the prison after medical examinations, and accordingly the number of patients will decrease.
Meanwhile, the prison media spokesman said that the former member of parliament Mr. Duminda Silva, who was recently sentenced to death by the court’s decision, was brought from the Jayawardenepura hospital to the prison hospital last Friday, January 19.
Currently, the number of inmates held in the 28 prisons across the island is 33,000.
Mr. Gamini Dissanayake also said that several buildings that are currently not being used are being renovated in order to increase the space of the prisons.
