The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) recorded a statement from former President Maithripala Sirisena over granting a presidential pardon to Royal Park murder convict Shramantha Jayamaha.

The CID had recorded a statement from the former President at his residence in Colombo for a period of three hours.

The recorded statement has been forwarded to the Attorney General.

Shramantha Jayamaha was sentenced to death for the murder of Yvonne Jonsson at the Royal Park Condominium complex in Rajagiriya in 2005.

He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2012 but was later convicted of murder by the Court of Appeal.

The Supreme Court thereafter sentenced him to death over the Royal Park murder incident.

Former President Maithripala Sirisena later granted him a presidential pardon in 2016.
