Kandana St. Sebastian National Shrine is one of the most visited Catholic shrines in the Colombo Archdiocese and its annual feast is attended by more than 100,000 devotees from all over the island.
A long-standing request had been made to provide necessary provisions for the construction of a drain system to carry the water that collects in the church and the surrounding premises to Wela, and an amount of 06 million rupees has been estimated for that.
The President handed over the check for 02 million rupees under the first phase of the project to the head priest, Father Lalith Expeditus.
Also, the road from Negombo road to the shrine is very dilapidated and according to the request to restore it, the President contacted the Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Mr. Bandula Gunawardena on the phone and informed him to restore the said road immediately.
Also, the President discussed with the Fathers about the educational activities of the Catholic schools in the Negombo region and mentioned that the government is focused on providing quick solutions to the problems that have arisen in the Catholic schools.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe, who visited the Catholic people who had visited the St. Sebastian’s Shrine over the weekend, engaged in a friendly conversation asking for their information.
Fathers including Father Ivan Perera, former general manager of Catholic schools, and former Minister John Amaratunga were present on this occasion.
