President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has informed the Supreme Court, through an affidavit, that the decision taken by the Constitutional Council to recommend the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon — who served as the Senior DIG of the Western Province — as Inspector General of Police is flawed.
This position was conveyed to the Court by the Secretary to the President through Additional Solicitor General and President’s Counsel Nerin Pulle, who appeared on behalf of the Attorney General.
The Additional Solicitor General made this submission when the Supreme Court took up for consideration a Fundamental Rights petition seeking a declaration that the manner in which Deshabandu Tennakoon, formerly Senior DIG of the Western Province, was appointed as Inspector General of Police is unconstitutional.
The matter was heard before a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, Justice Mahinda Samayawardena, and Justice Achala Vengappuli.
After considering the facts presented, the legal team appearing on behalf of the petitioners informed the Court of their willingness to conclude the hearing of the relevant petitions. Accordingly, the hearing of the petitions was concluded.
